Geekie Ties It With 12 Seconds Left, Lindholm Wins It in OT as Bruins Edge Hawks 5-4

Final score graphic: Blackhawks 4, Bruins 5 (OT)

Boston trailed three times at TD Garden on Halloween afternoon, then Morgan Geekie tied it at 19:48 of the third and Elias Lindholm won it 2:32 into overtime.

Trick or treat. The Bruins gave the TD Garden crowd a bit of both on Halloween afternoon. They trailed the Chicago Blackhawks three different times, including 4-3 in the final minute, before Morgan Geekie tied it with 12 seconds left and Elias Lindholm won it 2:32 into overtime. Final: Bruins 5, Blackhawks 4.

The win snaps a two-game skid after losses in Carolina and St. Louis. Boston moves to 10-4-1 with 21 points. Chicago falls to 4-9-1.

Pasta passes Bergy

With Chicago up 1-0 on Anton Frondell's power-play goal at 6:04 of the first, David Pastrnak tied it at 13:05, assisted by Pavel Zacha. It was his eighth goal of the season and the 428th of his career. That moves him past Patrice Bergeron (427) and alone into third on the Bruins' all-time goals list, behind only Johnny Bucyk and Phil Esposito.

Back and forth

Frondell struck again at 3:31 of the second, with assists from Tyler Bertuzzi and Sam Rinzel, to put Chicago back in front. Forward Casey Mittelstadt answered at 12:34 for his fifth goal, set up by James Hagens, and it was 2-2 after 40 minutes.

The third got wild. Ryan Greene put the Hawks ahead at 9:38, and Connor Bedard made it 4-2 at 12:20. Mason Lohrei pulled Boston within one 46 seconds later at 13:06, assisted by JJ Peterka and Tanner Jeannot. Then, with 12 seconds left, Geekie buried the tying goal off feeds from Charlie McAvoy and Peterka.

Lindholm ends it

Overtime didn't last long. McAvoy set up Lindholm at 2:32 for his fifth of the season, and the Garden went home happy. McAvoy finished with two assists, and Peterka also had two.

Dipper battles

Michael DiPietro got the start and was busy all afternoon. He stopped 37 of 41 shots for the win, as Chicago outshot Boston 41-32. Arvid Soderblom made 27 saves on 32 shots for the Hawks and took the overtime loss.

Stat of the Night

42-20

Boston's edge in faceoffs (67.7%).

  • 37: saves for DiPietro on 41 shots
  • 0-for-3: Boston on the power play; Chicago went 1-for-3
  • 22-16: Boston's edge in hits

Three stars

1. Elias Lindholm (BOS): OT winner. 2. Anton Frondell (CHI): two goals. 3. Charlie McAvoy (BOS): two assists, including the primary on both the tying goal and the winner.

What it means

It wasn't pretty. Boston gave up 41 shots and a power-play goal to a team that came in near the bottom of the standings. But the Bruins showed some fight, the offense woke up for five goals after scoring one in each of the last two games, and Pasta passed Bergy. Next up, the Vegas Golden Knights come to TD Garden on Monday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. ET. Let's go, B's! 🐻
